Common Potoo - The Common Potoo is a nocturnal bird that hunts by night and sleeps during the day. As darkness falls the bird becomes active, flying sorties from its perch to snatch large, winged insects from the air. It spends the daylight hours perched on a tall tree stump, where it remains perfectly still to avoid being spotted by birds of prey. Its upright posture and brown-grey plumage will convince all but the most keen-eyed observer that it is part of the stump. A big lens on a sturdy tripod are the essentials for a crisp shot of a potoo. |
