Eyelash Pit Viper - Eyelash Pit Viper This poisonous snake derives its name from the two pointed scales that protrude above each of its eyes like huge eyelashes. Common belief is that they offer protection to the animal’s eyes as it moves through the undergrowth. Pit vipers are highly efficient sit-and-wait predators. They can spend many days in one place patiently waiting for prey to pass by. Heat-sensitive pits behind each nostril alert the snake to the presence of another animal; if the snake is hungry it will strike once the prey is close enough and inject a highly toxic venom into its blood. The prey is then swallowed whole.
