Violet Sabrewing Hummingbird
Violet Sabrewing Hummingbird - The Violet Sabrewing is the largest of the 52 hummingbird species found in Costa Rica. It has an average length of 6 inches and weighs between 9 and 11 grams. One of its favorite flowers is the heliconia, from which it obtains nectar, a highly concentrated source of energy that fuels its extremely active lifestyle. Like all hummingbirds it will also supplement its diet with insects and spiders, which provide an important source of protein that nectar cannot offer.
