Samay Lagoon Lodge is equipped with 22 comfortable single and double rooms complete with ceiling fans, private baths, efficient and personalized service. There are experienced local guides for both nature tours and boat excursions. The lodge is well equipped with fiberglass built boats as well as canoes for two, three and four people.

Tours are individually arranged in small groups for maximum enjoyment and safety. Tour packages are available for safaris on the Rio San Juan (Nicaragua), Rio Sarapiqui, Rio Colorado to Samay Lagoon. We especially feature river boat tours, lagoon canoeing and jungle hiking. We also offer sport fishing on catch and release basis.

Day 1

Between 9:00 and 9:30 A.M. you will be picked up at your hotel by our representative. Our private air-conditioned minibus will take you through the beautiful Braulio Carillo National Park. Arrival at Rio Sarapiqui in Puerto Viejo at approximately 11:30 am. Lunch will be served in the little tico restaurant close to the docks where our boat captain and river guide is waiting for you.

From Puerto Viejo your jungle safari begins as you embark on our modern Tico river boat. The boat will take you via the Sarapiqui River to the Refugio National of Barra del Colorado. The tour passes through beautiful Southern Nicaragua. (You will need your passport and US-$ 5,- for the visa. Don’t worry, border guards here are both friendly and courteous.) The boat continues down the Rio San Juan, to the Rio Colorado and then to your final destination on the Samay Lagoon.

Along this trip (approx. 4 hours) you will experience the rainforest of Costa Rica. Full of lush vegetation and a diversity of wildlife, a nature lover’s dream. Along the river’s edge you will be able to see iguanas, monkeys, crocodiles and a variety of beautiful birds.

Upon your arrival at the Samay Lodge you will be greeted by one of your hosts who will offer you a welcome drink. There will be time to stroll along the Samay Peninsula, relax on the pristine Caribbean beach, lie in one of our hammocks or unwind in your private beach front room. At 6:30 P.M. dinner will be served in the Samay Lodge, a place of rustic beauty whose environment will stimulate conversation and camaraderie. All meals are served family style, the best in Tico and international cuisine. Our health conscious chef prides himself on using locally grown, natural ingredients.

After dinner the guests are able to choose from a selection of cool beverages from Samay’s bar, which specializes in the finest of tropical drinks like Caipirinhas and Pina Coladas. Guests can unwind in an ideal setting to enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. Couples may also enjoy a beautiful moonlite stroll along the private beach, with the waves of the warm Caribbean breaking nearby.

Day 2

Breakfast will be served at 8:00 A.M..After breakfast our jungle guide will lead you by canoe across the lagoon and guide you safely on an exciting three hour jungle canoe and hiking tour exploring the lagoons, rivers and forests of Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge and the northern part of the Tortuguero channels. The tour is easily manageable by everyone. Our oldest youngster was 78 years of age, a real nature enthusiast!

After lunch you are welcome to join the boat and canoe tour to Laguna Nueve where you can enjoy the wilderness of the National Park. Dinner will be served at 6.30 P.M.. After dinner our nature guide will take you on the Samay Lagoon night tour. You can see crocodiles, birds, iguanas, fish, depiscuinte. A absolute unique rainforest experience!

Day 3

After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll board the river boat which will take you back the San Juan river to Puerto Viejo. Rio San Juan like the Amazon is divided into many arms and channels. Often it will be hard to recognize that you came this way to Samay Lagoon. Snacks are served on the boat. Lunch in Puerto Viejo, Sarapiqui. You will be back in San Jose between 4 and 5 P.M.
