| Uaxactún is located north of Tikal, in the jungles of Petén. Its importance lies in the fact that it is at Uaxactún that the oldest date of the Maya Classic Period was recorded, engraved on stele 9 in the year 320 A.D. Uaxactun was also an important place for astronomical observation center, indicated by the orientation of its temples in the plaza, which is related to the appearance of the sun in the solstices and equinoxes. | |||||

| Nestled in the vegetation on the Pasión River are archaeological sites which flourished in this region of Petén during the Classic Period: Ceibal, Dos Pilas and Aguateca. This basin, which includes the Petexbatún Lagoon, is one of the most interesting combinations of waterways, natural beauty and archaeological interest. It is the best preserved and restored of the sites. It includes a complex of palaces and stelae. Recent investigations at Dos Pilas and Aguateca have brought to light findings of great importance for the study of the decline of the Maya civilization. | |||||
