A group of islands located at the south end of Lake Nicaragua, a short boat ride from San Carlos. Many of the islands are only inhabited by birds or monkeys. The main island of Mancarrón has a hotel. This is a remote and secluded area where a slow and relaxed pace is a must. Local artists are famous for their naive paintings and colorful balsa wood carvings and the archipelago serves as an inspiration for much of the country's poetry. The Nicaraguan poet Ernesto Cardenal established a communal society on the island made up of artists and poets who, when not working on their artistic creations, stroll down to the lake to row or fish in the peaceful waters. This group of 36 islands has a land surface of 4,020 acres mostly of basalt and igneous rocks. The most abundant wildlife are birds and fish although there are some howler monkeys and white tailed deer. Without a doubt, the most spectacular sunsets in Nicaragua are those of Solentiname. |
