Weather

El Salvador’s small size should mean that variations in its weather should be minimal. After all, a country roughly the same size as Massachusetts can’t have that many different climates, right?

Well, yes and no. El Salvador is in the tropics, which means that it’s hot. It also means that there are only two seasons, wet and dry. The wet season runs from May to October and is characterized by sunny mornings and rainy afternoons. The dry season runs from November to April and is sunny, dry, and very hot.

That’s the rule of thumb, anyway. But the weather in El Salvador is also affected by its physical geography. Low-lying areas along the coast are always hot, rain or shine. But the higher into the mountains you get, the cooler it is. The highest points in El Salvador can sometimes get near to freezing. But in the central plateaux, where most people live, you can expect the weather to be in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit year-round.
