Looking for a remote work haven? Bocas del Toro in Panama has it all. From reliable Wi-Fi to breathtaking views, this guide unveils the top workspaces where you can combine productivity with tropical bliss.
In May 2021, Panama became the first country in Central America to enact a remote work visa to stimulate the post-pandemic economy.
The Visa de Corta Estancia como Trabajador Remoto allows individuals to live and work in Panama for up to nine months, provided they meet certain criteria. It can be renewed for an additional nine months if desired.
Now, the burning question for many remote workers is: Where should I go in Panama? For me, the answer is simple – Bocas del Toro.
Bocas del Toro is an group of islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama, near the Costa Rican border. Although most of Bocas del Toro province belongs to the mainland, the islands are where most people gravitate. When people hear “Bocas del Toro,” they generally envision the islands.
Remote work is not a new concept. Digital nomads have been coming to Central America for years. However, the pandemic introduced a whole new “work from home” culture to many people who never would have considered it before.
Bocas del Toro has kept pace with the technological advancements necessary to accommodate remote workers
These islands warmly embrace digital nomads, offering excellent Wi-Fi connections. Consequently, I have compiled a list of my favorite public workspaces in Bocas del Toro, where remote workers can open their laptops and be productive.
While it is unnecessary to work exclusively from coffee shops, bars, or restaurants, as working from home is an option, there are instances when interacting with other remote workers or gaining a fresh perspective in a new location is desirable.
For me, a digital nomad-friendly location must possess the following:
- Reliable Wi-Fi.
- Accessible outlets for charging electronics.
- Tasty food and beverages.
- Comfortable work areas.
- A relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
- Friendly staff who understand and respect the need to work without constant pressure to make purchases.
Below, I have highlighted a few places in Bocas del Toro that satisfy the aforementioned requirements for remote workers:
