Honduras Reopens Land Borders and Extends Airport Opening Hours

Honduras land borders reopened on October 19 after seven months of closure, while it also announces that its international airports will extend their opening hours from November 1 onward.

Honduras opened its land borders with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua on Monday. This follows immigration chief Carolina Menjivar’s announcement last week that travelers could use the land borders from October 19.

Speaking at a press conference, she said, “All travelers must meet the new entry and transit requirements applicable to national and foreign citizens.”

The new requirements mandate all travelers to present a negative COVID test taken within 72-hours of arrival.

Like Guatemala, Belize, and Panama, Honduras accepts both PCR and rapid antigen tests.

Travelers must also register online with immigration in advance of crossing the border. This applies to both entering and departing Honduras. While at the border, mask usage is mandatory at all times.

These requirements are for both Honduran citizens/legal residents and foreign visitors. They match the rules applicable for entering Honduras by air.

Any travelers arriving without a COVID test will “undergo a clinical evaluation” by health authorities. They will then determine whether the traveler can enter Honduras or not.

Travelers deemed eligible to enter will need to undergo mandatory quarantine.

From October 26 Honduras will allow international bus transportation across its borders.

This is great news for international bus companies in Central America like Tica Bus. Bus companies will operate under Honduran Institute of Land Transportation (IHTT) guidelines.

For the time being, land borders will open to travelers from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily.

In other news, authorities announced that Honduras’ airports would extend their opening hours.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, Honduras’ international airports will open at night and on Sundays from November 1. This will allow them to accommodate more flights into Honduras.

Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula airports will open every day from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM while La Ceiba and Roatan airports will open every day from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Honduras originally closed its land and air borders on March 15. It reopened its airports on August 17.
