Planning to spend Easter in Belize? This time of year offers the perfect glimpse into Belizean culture through Good Friday processions, family gatherings, horse races, hot cross buns, kite flying, and more!
Belize celebrates Easter in its own way, blending British Commonwealth traditions with the Catholic customs shared across much of Central America. Hot cross buns and horse racing exist alongside Good Friday processions, family picnics, and church services, reflecting Belize’s position as an English-speaking country with strong regional cultural ties.
Holy Week is widely observed across the country, particularly in communities with deep Catholic roots. At the same time, Easter weekend also brings sporting events, beach gatherings, and family outings. The result is a holiday that combines religious observance with a distinctly Belizean sense of community celebration.
Holy Week in Belize
Good Friday
Holy Week, or Semana Santa, shapes the rhythm of Easter in Belize. Good Friday is the most solemn day, where churches across the country fill with families gathering for services and reflection.
In the community of Benque Viejo del Carmen, locals stage one of the country’s most famous reenactments of the Passion of Christ. After evening mass, a procession moves through town depicting Jesus’s journey to the crucifixion. Participants walk over alfombras de aserrín, colorful sawdust carpets laid across the streets in a tradition also seen in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
San Pedro on Ambergris Caye observes the day with similar gravity. The Celebration of the Seven Words reflects on the final sayings of Christ before the Santo Entierro procession begins. Men carry a glass casket representing Jesus’s body while women carry a statue of the Virgin Mary through the streets.
Belize’s Good Friday alcohol restrictions changed in 2023 when national dry-day rules were relaxed. Bars can now serve alcohol, although some communities still limit sales until evening and many people continue to observe the day traditionally. Fish dishes and hot cross buns remain common Good Friday foods.
Holy Saturday
By Holy Saturday the mood begins to shift. The Cross Country Cycling Classic, one of Belize’s biggest annual sporting events, sends cyclists on a 144-mile route between Belize City and San Ignacio. Crowds gather along the highway to watch the race as riders from Belize and abroad compete in the demanding event.
At the same time, beach communities and islands begin filling with holiday visitors. Places like Placencia, Caye Caulker, and San Pedro see an influx of Belizean families heading to the coast for the long weekend.
Kite flying is another widely recognized Easter tradition. Families often make kites at home using bamboo or coconut leaf sticks and colorful tissue paper, passing the craft down through generations. Over Easter weekend parks, beaches, and open fields fill with kites of all shapes and sizes. In Belizean tradition the rising kite is sometimes linked to the resurrection and ascension of Christ, although for many families it is simply a favorite holiday pastime.

Easter Sunday and Monday
Easter Sunday returns the focus to church services celebrating the resurrection. Afterward, families gather for meals or head outdoors for barbecues or picnics at rivers, waterfalls, or beaches. Informal football matches, music, and small fairs often appear in towns and villages during the afternoon.
Easter Monday brings one final event: the Castleton Derby in Burrell Boom. This horse race reflects Belize’s historical ties to British sporting culture. Locally bred horses race along a rural track while families gather to watch, eat, and socialize in an atmosphere that mixes sport with a village fair.
Traditional Easter Foods in Belize
Food plays an important role in Belize’s Easter traditions, reflecting both Catholic customs and local culinary influences.
Good Friday meals typically avoid meat, placing seafood at the center of the table. Fried fish, often snapper or grouper, is commonly served with potatoes or bread. Hot cross buns are another staple during the holiday. These spiced buns marked with a cross symbolize the crucifixion and are widely sold by bakeries and street vendors during Holy Week.
Other traditional foods often appear during the Easter weekend as well. Garnaches (crispy tortillas topped with beans and cheese) are a popular snack, while tamales wrapped in banana leaves provide a heavier meal. Salbutes topped with cabbage and chicken are another common street food.
Cassava pudding is a familiar dessert in many Belizean households during holidays. In Garifuna communities, fish soup cooked with coconut milk and plantains may also appear on the Easter table.
While Good Friday meals emphasize simplicity and religious observance, Easter Sunday brings a more celebratory atmosphere. Families gather for larger meals that may include rice and beans, seafood dishes, and desserts shared among relatives and friends.

Visiting Belize for Easter
Easter is one of the busiest travel periods of the year in Belize. Like Christmas and New Year’s, the long weekend draws foreign vacationers, diasposa Belizeans coming home, and local people traveling within the country. Hotels in popular destinations like Placencia, San Pedro, and Caye Caulker often fill well in advance.
Travelers visiting during this time can expect lively beaches, busy towns, and a festive atmosphere throughout the holiday weekend. Easter typically falls within Belize’s dry season, bringing warm temperatures and clear skies that make outdoor activities especially appealing.
Compared with the massive processions of Guatemala or the large-scale sawdust carpet displays seen in El Salvador, Easter celebrations in Belize are generally smaller in scale. Yet the combination of Catholic observance, national sporting events, beach gatherings, and family traditions gives the holiday its own character.
For visitors, it offers a chance to see Belize at a moment when religious tradition, community life, and outdoor celebration all come together.
