Sometimes, a hotel pool is simply somewhere to cool off after a day of exploring. Other times, it’s the reason you book the hotel in the first place.

After years of traveling around Central America, we’ve seen pools in just about every setting imaginable. Some overlook active volcanoes, others disappear into the ocean, while a few are so large you could happily spend an entire day without leaving the water. Some are designed for families, others for couples, and a handful are destinations in their own right.

Choosing our favorites wasn’t easy, and there are plenty of outstanding pools that didn’t quite make the cut. Rather than ranking them from best to worst, we’ve picked a collection of hotel pools that we think stand out for their setting, design, or simply the experience they offer.

Of course, none of these pools stay crystal clear by accident. Tropical sunshine, heavy rains, falling leaves, insects, and year-round use mean pool maintenance is a constant job throughout the region. While hotels rely on dedicated maintenance teams to keep their pools looking their best, many homeowners turn to technology like, say, a robotic pool vacuum to handle much of the day-to-day cleaning automatically.

Here are some of our favorite hotel pools in Central America, presented in no particular order.

Alaia Belize, Ambergris Caye, Belize

For Belize’s only suspended rooftop pool

Perched above the resort with uninterrupted views across the Caribbean Sea, Alaia is home to Belize’s only suspended rooftop pool. Circular glass viewing panels set into the pool floor let swimmers look straight down to the level below, creating a feature that’s as much a conversation starter as it is a place to cool off. It’s a clever design that feels unique without ever becoming a gimmick.

Alaia has two other excellent pools, including a large main pool with a swim-up bar and a quieter family pool, but it’s the Vista Rooftop Pool that earns the resort a place on this list.

Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Because the best “pool” isn’t really a pool at all

Strictly speaking, Tabacón‘s greatest attraction isn’t actually a swimming pool. It’s a naturally flowing thermal river. Heated by Arenal Volcano, mineral-rich waters wind through tropical rainforest, feeding a network of naturally formed pools, waterfalls, and secluded soaking spots. Rather than spending your time in a single pool, you’ll find yourself wandering along the river, discovering different pools, waterfalls, and quiet corners as you go. Every bend in the river reveals another place to stop, whether that’s a quiet pool tucked beneath lush vegetation or a warm cascade surrounded by the sights and sounds of the rainforest.

What makes Tabacón so special is that this isn’t an artificial collection of hot springs. As the resort itself describes it, it’s a “living river,” flowing naturally under the force of gravity as it creates more than twenty thermal pools throughout the property. Each has its own temperature, depth, and character, making no two stops quite the same.

Overnight guests can also enjoy the adults-only Shangri-La Gardens, an exclusive upstream section of the thermal river reserved for a quieter, more secluded experience. But it’s the Thermal River itself that earns Tabacón a place on this list. It’s one of those experiences that simply couldn’t exist anywhere else.

Westin Reserva Conchal, Playa Conchal, Costa Rica

Because sometimes bigger really is better

Frequently described as being the size of a small lake, Westin Reserva Conchal’s pool is one of the largest in Central America. Instead of feeling like a single swimming pool, it unfolds into a series of wide curves, quiet corners, bridges, and palm-fringed lounging areas that make it easy to spend hours in the water without ever feeling crowded.

Despite its size, the pool never feels overwhelming. Families naturally gravitate toward the livelier areas, while couples can usually find a quieter corner to relax with a drink in hand. It’s one of those rare resort pools that manages to feel both energetic and peaceful at the same time.

There are certainly more dramatic pools on this list, but few are quite as much fun. If your idea of a perfect vacation involves spending an entire afternoon in the water before wandering straight to dinner, it’s hard to think of a better place to do it.

Casa Palopó, Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Because some views deserve to be enjoyed from the water

Located high above the lake, the pool at Casa Palopó seems to merge effortlessly with the deep blue waters below, while Guatemala’s famous volcanic skyline fills the horizon beyond. It’s one of those rare places where the scenery does all the talking. You could spend an hour swimming, another hour on a lounger, and still find yourself stopping every few minutes to admire the view.

Unlike many infinity pools that simply overlook the ocean, this one feels much more intimate. The ever-changing light across the lake, boats crossing the water, and the three volcanoes standing guard in the distance create a landscape that never quite looks the same twice. It’s easy to understand why they call Lake Atitlán the most beautiful lake in the world, and Casa Palopó offers one of its finest vantage points.

The hotel itself is one of our favorite places to stay around Lake Atitlán, but it’s the infinity pool that lingers in the memory long after you’ve left. Some pools are destinations in themselves. Others simply make an unforgettable destination even better.

Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails, Costa Rica

Because sometimes the setting matters more than the pool

The swimming pool at Arenal Observatory Lodge isn’t the biggest, the fanciest, or the most luxurious on this list. In fact, it’s refreshingly simple.

Set within the only hotel inside Arenal Volcano National Park, the infinity-style pool is surrounded by rainforest with Arenal Volcano rising beyond the trees. It’s the kind of place where you might spend the morning hiking through the forest or spotting toucans and monkeys before cooling off in the afternoon, all without ever feeling like you’ve left nature behind.

The spring-fed pool reflects the lodge’s low-key, eco-conscious philosophy, while the nearby jacuzzi offers another place to relax after a day outdoors. There’s nothing flashy about any of it, and that’s precisely the point. The focus has always been on the landscape rather than the amenities.

Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas, Costa Rica

Because the best pool is your own

Some hotels have one spectacular pool. Casa Chameleon takes a different approach. While the hotel’s main infinity pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean and the Catalinas Islands, what really makes this place stand out is that every villa comes with its own private plunge pool. It’s a simple idea, but one that completely changes the experience. Early morning swims, an afternoon dip between exploring Guanacaste, or a quiet sunset in the water become private moments rather than something shared with dozens of other guests.

That’s not to take anything away from the main pool, which is a beautiful place to relax with a drink and enjoy the views, especially at sunset. But it’s those private plunge pools that stay with you. They’re one of the reasons Casa Chameleon has become such a popular choice for couples looking for a quieter, more intimate escape.

Acantilados, La Libertad, El Salvador

Because the cliffs are part of the experience

El Salvador’s Pacific coast is famous for its dramatic volcanic cliffs, and few hotel pools make better use of them than the one at Acantilados in La Libertad. Built directly into the rocky coastline, the hotel’s multi-level infinity pool seems to hang above the Pacific, with waves breaking against the cliffs below. The different levels create plenty of space to spread out and watch the sunset.
